BYF Supports Youth Development Through Sport

The Bougainville Youth Federation (BYF) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting youth development through sports following a K1,000 contribution to the Kainake Sports Association towards its 2026 End-of-Soccer-Season Awards.
BYF President Mr Michael Dave presented the contribution to the association on 12 September during an engagement with young people and sports representatives from the Motuna Huyono Tokunutui Constituency in Siwai District.
Kainake Sports Association operates under the Siwai District Youth Association (DYA), which continues to use sport as a platform for bringing young people together and creating opportunities for positive community participation.
According to Siwai District Youth Association Chairman Mr Mark Nauma and Kainake Sports Chairman Mr Vincent Kunsi, the awards activity supports the broader goals of the Siwai District Youth Association by promoting youth participation, healthy living, talent development and unity through sports across Siwai District.
The End-of-Season Awards provide an opportunity to recognise the commitment and achievements of young people who participated in soccer throughout the 2026 season, while encouraging continued participation in sporting activities.
Sport as a Platform for Youth Development and promoting Youth participation
During the visit, Mr Dave used the opportunity to raise awareness about BYF and its organisational structure and the role of BYF has as an umbrella body representing youth associations across Bougainville, highlighting the importance of strengthening connections between youth organisations at the community, constituency and district levels.
The awareness was particularly important for young people who had limited knowledge of BYF's role and the work it undertakes to support youth participation, leadership and development across Bougainville. Mr Dave encouraged young people to remain actively involved in community initiatives and to make use of platforms such as sport to build leadership, teamwork and positive relationships.
The engagement with Kainake Sports Association highlights the role that community sports can play in supporting young people's wellbeing and development. Beyond competition, sporting activities provide young people with opportunities to develop teamwork, discipline, leadership and communication skills, while promoting healthy lifestyles and strengthening community unity. BYF's support for the Kainake Sports Association reflects its continued efforts to connect with youth organisations across Bougainville and support initiatives that create positive opportunities for young people. BYF looks forward to strengthening its partnership with the Siwai District Youth Association and other youth-led organisations as it continues to promote meaningful youth participation and development across Bougainville.
